Vehicle Grant
In order to encourage JHU vehicle purchases to be fully electric, or hybrid electric, rather than gasoline- or diesel-powered, the Green Fleet Team is awarding up to $50,000 in grants during fiscal year 2022 (July 1, 2021 – June 30, 2022).
Grants are available in two amounts:
- $5,000 per vehicle purchased by JHU that is fully electric (EV)
- $4,000 per vehicle purchased by JHU that is hybrid electric
In order to be eligible for a grant, vehicles must be registered and titled by Johns Hopkins University during the fiscal year. Given the limited funds available, departments are limited to $12,000 maximum award. Awards will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
Procurement and Transportation will review requests sent to vehiclegrant@jhu.edu with support from the Green Fleet Team as needed. A list of eligible vehicles is included below, but as new products continue to come out monthly, there may be other vehicles allowed. Final grant decision to be approved by Category Lead in Procurement and Director of Transportation Services.
Grant requests will be reviewed within 5 business days of submission and potential awards will be communicated during the procurement process. Grant winners agree that photographs of vehicles and case studies may be used by JHU to monitor the effectiveness of the grant program and celebrate more sustainable vehicle purchases.
Once registered and titled by JHU, the purchasing department will receive a budget transfer in the grant amount, typically at the end of each month. Vehicles must be in service by June 30, 2022.

Check https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/taxevb.shtml for a regularly updated listing, including used vehicles from prior model years. Many manufacturers have 2022 model year EV’s coming out soon, including trucks, vans, SUV’s and cars.
To be certified for the grant, the vehicle must meet the following requirements:
- The vehicle must be made by a manufacturer (i.e., it doesn't include conventional vehicles converted to electric drive).
- It must be treated as a motor vehicle for purposes of title II of the Clean Air Act.
- It must have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of not more than 14,000 lbs.
